Challenge
Oni Municipality, situated in Georgia’s mountainous region, is characterized by economic and educational limitations. The municipality lacks higher education institutions, which reduces professional and economic development opportunities for women and girls. While women make up 51% of the local population, their employment rate remains low. Limited access to electronic communications and public transportation, as well as underdeveloped small businesses, further complicate the situation.
Solution
In response to these challenges, during 2021-2022, through a partnership with Oni Municipality and within the Mercy Corps program framework, a “Women’s Room” was established in the town of Oni. This space became an accessible location for information and consultations, serving more than 200 people annually. However, expanding this service to rural areas remained an urgent need, especially in communities located near territories occupied by Russia during the 2008 war.
Addressing these needs, a new project was implemented through a grant from the Bulgarian Embassy, transforming two libraries – in Ghari and Glola – into “Women’s Rooms.” The technological equipment and inclusive approach of these spaces provide women with opportunities for digital education and entrepreneurial skills development.
It is particularly noteworthy that the Glola administrative unit includes Shovi, where a tragedy occurred on August 3, 2023. The population especially needs solidarity and support, which adds additional significance to this project.
The initiative not only promotes women’s socio-economic empowerment but also strengthens community resilience as a whole. The project combines women’s education, promotion of gender equality, and development of inclusive services, which represents a prerequisite for sustainable and long-term development in Oni Municipality.
