NALAG President and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze made a statement about the 16-day campaign against gender-based violence.
“The National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia traditionally joins the global 16-day campaign against gender-based violence this year as well.
Besides the fact that violence is inherently unacceptable and there is no reason to justify it, it is important to remember that every person enjoys fundamental rights, and violating these rights in the form of gender-based and domestic violence is a serious crime.
In recent years, both central and local governments have made significant efforts to empower women, especially victims of violence, to make them feel the support and care of the state. Clearly, the country has made fundamental progress in this regard, but more mobilization is needed to make this support more intensive.
Most importantly, alongside this, society’s perception of gender-based violence must change. It is important for each member of society to realize that indifference and standing aside is unacceptable” – Kakha Kaladze.
