Through the advocacy of the National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG), 4 more municipalities have joined the European Charter on ‘Equality of Women and Men in Local Life’.
This time, the document was signed by the leaders of Dusheti, Dedoplistskaro, Dmanisi, and Khashuri municipalities.
The Charter, created by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) in May 2006, aims to improve gender equality in municipalities by implementing measures within their jurisdiction.
By joining the Charter, each signatory party commits to developing an equality action plan that will define the priorities, actions, and resources needed to ensure equality between women and men at the local level.
In Georgia, a total of 30 self-governing units have signed this Charter, though other municipalities have also expressed readiness to join the document.
The advocacy for the Charter is being implemented within the framework of the project “Women’s Leadership for Democracy in Georgia,” which NALAG is carrying out with the support of UN Women, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and the Norwegian government.
